Introduction
The Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project is the proposed extension of transit service from the Old Town Transit Center north to the University City community in the City of San Diego. It is one of several specific transit projects identified in the Regional Transportation Plan, adopted by SANDAG in 2007, and in the Regional Transportation Improvement Plan adopted in 2008. The Mid-Coast Project is a TransNet Early Action Project, one of three projects within the region with the highest priority for implementation under the TransNet Extension that was passed by the voters in 2004.
The Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project will extend transit service from the Old Town Transit Center, north to University City, University Towne Centre (UTC), and the University of California San Diego (UCSD) with direct service to downtown San Diego. The project will provide connections to activity centers and destinations in other areas of the county - including Mission Valley, San Diego State University, and South County – and will improve travel options to the employment, education, medical, and retail centers along the corridor.
Travel demand is expected to increase in the region and in the Mid-Coast Corridor as a direct result of population and employment growth. There are limited plans in place to expand the highway system to meet this growing demand and relieve congestion. There is a need to build on the existing transit system’s capacity and level of service by providing a higher capacity and more reliable transit alternative with improved travel times. The Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project will improve regional transportation capacity and mobility by providing reliable transit service along one of the most congested corridors in San Diego County. This project will help minimize dependence on auto travel and will complement - and integrate with - existing transit systems in San Diego.
