I-5/Genesee Avenue Interchange Project

As part of improving the overall transportation system on I-5, this project proposes to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on Genesee Avenue and at its interchange. The project area is within the University City Community Planning area in the City of San Diego. Currently, the project is in the environmental phase.

Project Features

Key features of this project include:

  • Replacing existing overcrossings at Genesee Avenue and Voigt Drive with wider structures that would accommodate additional vehicle lanes, sidewalks, and bicycle lanes
  • Widening ramps at Genesee Avenue and Sorrento Valley Road
  • Constructing auxiliary lanes between Genesee Avenue and La Jolla
Village Drive and between Genesee Avenue and Sorrento Valley Road
  • Realigning Gilman Drive

Project Benefits

By relieving traffic congestion along Genesee Avenue and its interchange at I-5, this project would greatly improve the movement of people and goods through the project area.

Air quality would also be improved, as emissions caused by idling cars in traffic congestion would be reduced. For pedestrians and bicyclists, the project also includes adding and improving sidewalks and bicycle lanes along the new Genesee Avenue and Voigt Drive overcrossings. Throughout the project area, landscape improvements would enhance the community streetscape and pedestrian experience.

Schedule

Construction on the project is scheduled to begin in early 2013. The project is scheduled to open to traffic in December 2014.

Funding

If the project is given environmental approval, funding will be allocated through a combination of federal, state, and regional TransNet revenue sources.
