I-5/SR 56 Interchange Project

This project will provide a better, less-congested freeway connection between I-5 and SR 56. It would do this by reducing congestion associated with traveling between I-5 and SR 56. This project would help to improve travel times and address congestion on I-5, SR 56, and local arterials such as El Camino Real, caused by traffic going from Westbound SR 56 to Northbound I-5 or Southbound I-5 to Eastbound SR 56.

Preliminary design work has begun and includes:
  • A traffic study was completed which includes traffic counts and volume forecasts for the year 2030.
  • A bike path feasibility study was completed in 2007 to review the possibility of extending the SR 56 bike path west of I-5.
  • Preliminary planning of the highway configuration
  • Community Workshops & Community Planning Group Presentations

Funding

Approximately $15.8 million has been programmed for the I-5/SR 56 Interchange Project through a combination of federal funding sources and City of San Diego funds. Design and construction costs for the project are dependent on completion of the environmental phase and which alternative is chosen.

Schedule

Spring 2012 – Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) will be released for a 45-day public review period and a public meeting will be held shortly after the release of the DEIR.

Fall 2012 – The Final EIR will be released.

Summer 2013 – Project construction will begin.
