SR 94 is an east-west route that begins at I-5 in San Diego County and terminates approximately 65 miles to the east at a junction with I-8. The westerly portion of SR 94, known as the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway, begins at the I-5 interchange and ends approximately 12 miles to the east in the community of Rancho San Diego. This segment serves primarily as a commuter route to and from downtown San Diego.

SR 94 intersects with the north-south routes: I-5, I-805, SR 15, SR 125 and SR 54. The SR 94 Carpool/Bus Lanes Project from I-805 and I-5 will provide a critical link for a multi-modal transportation system and provide commuters with transportation options by adding carpool/bus lanes to SR 94 from I-805 to the downtown San Diego area. The project will modify interchanges, connectors, and bridge overcrossings in the project corridor.

This project also proposes to:

  • improve traffic operations on SR 94 within the project limits where feasible
  • sustain the SR 94 corridor as a transportation resource for nearby residential and commercial areas
  • protect or enhance the natural and human environment along SR 94 within the project's limits
