Interstate 5 HOV Extension: Lomas Santa Fe Interchange
The I-5 Lomas Santa Fe Interchange Project (Unit 1) extended the
existing HOV lane in each direction from just south of Via de la
Valle to just south of Manchester Avenue and modified the Lomas
Santa Fe Drive interchange. The work is expected to relieve
congestion on the freeway by allowing carpools to continue
through the area, which is heavily congested daily. Two new
loop-style on-ramps were added to the Lomas Santa Fe Drive
interchange to allow access onto the freeway from either direction.
The new ramps will eliminate the left turns to the on-ramps that
frequently cause congestion on city streets. The project is part of a
plan to construct 10 miles of HOV lanes from the Mira Mesa
Boulevard area on I-805 (Unit 2) to Manchester Avenue on I-5.
Funding
The cost of the project was $66 million, funded by the Corridor
Mobility Improvement Account (CMIA) and TransNet. CMIA funds
were allocated from the transportation bonds voters passed in
November 2006 and TransNet funds came from the local half-cent
sales tax also approved by voters.
