Introduction

The Interstate 5 (I-5) corridor in North County is one of the most frequently traveled freeways in San Diego County. I-5 has many unique features including six lagoons, world-renowned coastal cities and unparalleled beaches. By the year 2030, the number of vehicles using I-5 daily is expected to nearly double.

To help improve the quality of life and address the increasing number of motorists on I-5, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) are proposing a number of projects intended to reduce congestion. In this web site you will find information about the proposed projects. These projects included a long-term project to add two managed lanes in each direction. Recently completed and/or near-term projects include: I-5 HOV/ Lomas Santa Fe Project, I-805 Carroll Canyon Road Extension Project and the I-5/SR 56 Interchange Project.

The information is updated frequently, so please check back. For the most recent developments in both planning and implementation of improvements to the I-5 see the section that follows.

Is it true that doubling the number of cars doubles the noise?
No. If the number of cars were to double, the traffic noise volume would only increase by 3 decibels from the previous volume. For comparison, the human ear perceives each 10-decibel increase in noise level as a doubling in loudness.
